The next great advance in 4x4.

The 2014 Nissan Pathfinder has quickly established itself in a new persona: the suburban family's seven-seat crossover utility vehicle. It's a competitive package that's attractive and thoughtfully conceived, offering the trim levels and features most often sought by families who want a mid-size vehicle with three rows of seats for people and all their stuff. And it's got more interior room and flexibility than some other competitors in the mid-size utility category, including the Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, and Toyota Highlander.

The curvaceous exterior lines do a good job of disguising the Pathfinder's height and bulk. Only close up to you realize how large it is, and the adjective "rakish" can fairly be applied even to this tall wagon. The same family design language used in the rest of the Nissan range will be familiar here. The Pathfinder leads with a bold chrome grille and heavily sculpted front fenders, and the accents on the rear fenders give it a hint of "shoulder line" that makes its overall look more fluid than many other tall wagons.

No other SUV  in this class gives you the choice of 2WD, 4WD, and Auto Modes. Turn the All-Mode 4x4i Dial, located just behind the gearshift, to lock into 4WD on rough terrain and in varying weather. Turn it again to switch into 2WD for better mileage. The intuitive Auto Mode senses slippery roads or rough terrain and automatically adjusts power to each wheel. When things smooth out, it switches back to 2WD.

What kind of transmission do you put in the Next Gen SUV? The class-exclusive, next-generation Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), obviously. Pathfinder’s new CVT eliminates gears by using a precisely machined metal drive chain instead of traditional fixed metal gears, which transfers power from the engine to the wheels far more effectively and smoothly. So whatever you ask from the engine, the CVT provides it by shifting seamlessly to give you the perfect speed, all while improving fuel economy.
